Fatal massive haemoptysis in an African child.

چکیده
REPORT Haemoptysis is rare in children, yet is one of the most frightening manifestations of cardiopulmonary disease. Haemoptysis is defined as coughing up blood, which could be mild, less than 150ml / day, large, between 150 and 400ml / day and massive, more than 400mls / day. Infectious diseases such as tuberculosis is an uncommon but a known cause of haemoptysis in children in developing countries. Massive haemoptysis is rare but associated with fatal outcome and a high mortality, even in best of centres. Consequently, no consensus about its investigation and management has emerged, with the result that much time may be lost in inappropriate investigations and treatment may be misdirected. . 1-4

Prevalence of haemoptysis in adults with pulmonary atresia and ventricular septal defect, and the role of mammary artery collateral vessels.
Recurrent or massive haemoptysis is a potentially lethal complication occurring in patients with congenital heart disease (CHD). In particular, it is most frequently described in patients with pulmonary vascular obstructive disease such as tetralogy of Fallot and pulmonary atresia with ventricular septal defect (PA-VSD). Although widely believed to be a rare complication of PA-VSD, the true pre...
متن کاملRecurrent and fatal haemoptysis caused by an atheromatous abdominal aortic aneurysm.
A 74 year old woman presented with a two month history of recurrent small hemoptyses and died after a subsequent massive haemoptysis. At postmortem examination the source of bleeding was found to be a leaking saccular, atheromatous abdominal aortic aneurysm, which had ruptured through the diaphragm into the lower lobe of the right lung.
متن کاملFatal massive haemoptysis after embolectomy for chronic pulmonary embolism.
Since the first report of successful "late" embolectomy for recurrent pulmonary embolism,' a number of patients have been described with significant pulmonary hypertension where clinical improvement associated with lowering of pulmonary artery pressure has followed removal of extensive, well-organised thrombo-embolic material from major pulmonary vessels.2 The following case history illustrates...
متن کاملA retrospective review comparing the treatment outcomes of emergency lung resection for massive haemoptysis with and without preoperative bronchial artery embolization.
OBJECTIVES The objective of this review was to determine the feasibility of emergency lung resection for massive haemoptysis without preoperative bronchial artery embolization (BAE). The potential for fatal recurrent haemoptysis following BAE may be avoided if surgery is undertaken instead. Furthermore, if the outcomes for emergency lung resection with and without BAE are equivalent, it may be ...
